Practicing our Faith in Challenging Times – Compassion in Action
What is your favorite Bible verse(s) – Why these verses?
John Wooden: “When opportunity comes, it is already too late to prepare.”
“With God it is never too late to prepare.”
1 Peter 3:15
Problems give opportunity to reflect.
The value of self-reflection:
When work on a project starts to go wrong it is wise to stop, think, reflect on what is not working and find new ways to make it work. The definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.”
Reflection turns experience into insight. Experience isn’t the best teacher. Evaluating experiences is where the learning and understanding comes from.
Psalm 139:23 – 24
What is really important to God:
John 3:16, 17 (GNB) “For God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him may not die but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to be its judge, but to be its Saviour.”
Augustine: “God loves each one of us as if there was only one of us to love.”
God loves His Church:
Ekklisia = “the body of faithful believers”; “the gathering of the faithful”
Church Germanic origins: “kirika” = “of the Lord”
Define: Sympathy, empathy, compassion
Read Galatians 6:2
Sacrificial love - Compassion = action
Forget the idea your helper is healthy.
Often helpers are people in pain helping others in pain.
The compassion of God: Isaiah 61:1 – 3
The compassion of Jesus: Matthew 9:36 “When He saw the crowds, He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”
Compassion = action
If we are going to follow Jesus’ example, we need to care about the world and His church, the way He does. Jesus loves the world and His church compassionately. Compassion in action.
The Saviour Of Men Came To Seek
The Saviour of men came to seek and to save The souls who were lost to the good His Spirit was moved for the world which He loved With the boundless compassion of God
Except I am moved with compassion How dwelleth Thy Spirit in me In word and in deed Burning love is my need I know I can find this in Thee
