Easter Sunday Service: Points to Ponder

Jesus' Victory on the Cross

Philippians 1:1 – 6

“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

In the Old Testament there are 380 prophecies concerning Jesus

Isaiah 53 – Luke 24:25 - 27

Psalm 22:1 – 31; Matt. 27:35, 39; 43 – 44, 46

Psalm 118:22 -24; Mark 12:10 – 12; Peter 2:6 – 8;

Isaiah 7:14; Matt. 1:22- 23; Luke 1:31 - 35

Isaiah 52:13–53:12.

Fulfillment:

Matthew 8:16–17, Matthew 20:28, Matthew 26:28, Matthew 27:59–60, Mark 10:45, Mark 14:24, Luke 22:20, John 12:37–38, Acts 8:32–35, Romans 10:16, Hebrews 9:28, 1 Peter 2:21–25.

  • Most decisive teacher:

  • Matt. 5:2; Matt. 7:29 “because He taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.”

  • 46 parables – 26 lessons

  • Jesus performed many miracles:

  • John 20:30 “Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not recorded in this book.”

  • Jesus interacted, meaningfully, with many people...

  • With children: Matt. 19:13 – 15

  • With the rich young man: Matt. 19:16 – 22

Jesus accomplishes His mission (fulfills all the prophecies):

John 19:28 – 30

2 Corinthians 1:20

(TLB) “He carries out and fulfills all of God’s promises, no matter how many of them there are; and we have told everyone how faithful He is, giving glory to His name”.

Jesus said: John 19:28 – 30 “Tetelestai”... “it is finished” - “it is accomplished”.

Jesus did not say: “Teleiosa” - “I am finished”.

Not a statement of defeat, but of victory.

The Glory of the Cross: Jesus gave His life that we may live

Colossians 2:13 – 15

Colossians 2:14 (International Children’s’ Bible) “We owed a debt because we’ve broken God's laws. That debt listed all the rules we’ve failed to follow. But God forgave our debt, and He canceled our debt by nailing it to the cross.”

Our Problem: “Our legal indebtedness”.

God’s Solution: “But God forgave our debt,”

“and He canceled our debt”.

Set free in Jesus: Romans 10:4; 1 Corinthians 15:21

Through vivid imagery, Paul shows us the complete adequacy of the redemptive work of Jesus. Sin is forgiven. Evil is conquered. Nothing more is needed.

Jesus made a complete payment for our sins:

Hebrews 10:18 “Now that sins have been forgiven, there is no need to offer any more sacrifices."

Five main types of sacrifices, or offerings, in the Old Testament.

The burnt offering (Leviticus 1; 6:8–13; 8:18-21; 16:24)

The grain offering (Leviticus 2; 6:14–23)

The peace offering (Leviticus 3; 7:11–34)

The sin offering (Leviticus 4; 5:1–13; 6:24–30; 8:14–17; 16:3–22)

The trespass offering (Leviticus 5:14–19; 6:1–7; 7:1–6)

Voluntary offerings: Burnt offerings; grain offerings; peace offerings.

Mandatory offerings: Sin offering; trespass offering.

These were “a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality however, is found in Christ” Colossians 2:17

Romans 5:18 – 19.
