Our Life is a Highway

Psalm 139:

'You discern my going out and my coming in, my lying down.

You are familiar with all of my ways'.

What an adventure to travel this journey of life. The road is wide open for all who stay on the path He has chosen for us.

When I think of the days when Jesus walked on this earth and His Disciples walked with him. They were willing to give up any comforts they may have had, probably left their loved ones behind but they travelled that open highway to go wherever He led them. I often wonder if I would have had faith that strong just to leave everything behind and start walking. I truly would like to believe I would have but let's face it, I don't think anyone of us today could answer that question with a 100% certainty.

Sometimes choosing which road to take is difficult. After that decision has been made, it still takes strength & determination to stay on it.

I often wonder about Jesus and His followers, talking as they walked. They hadn't chosen the smooth highway at all. As they walked from town to town, bringing the message of good news to the people, and the elation they received from them upon their arrival, must have encouraged them constantly to keep going on.

However, there were those times & places they weren't welcomed and endured persecution for His name but they travelled forward.

As we walk our own daily highway, there are always little BLESSINGS, words of hope & love from those around us & something in our day that give us the energy to thank Him for this day.

I have a book that belonged to my Mom. It had been given to her by Janet, one of her own dearest friends. It is a lovely little book based on Psalm 121, however there are poems in it as well. I picked out this one poem in particular because of the title. I'm sure many of you have read it.

THE BEAUTIFUL PROMISES OF GOD - Author Unknown

God hath not promised skies always blue,

Flower strewn pathways all our lives through.

God hath not promised sun without rain,

Joy without sorrow, peace without pain.

God hath not promised we shall not know

Toil and temptation, trouble and woe.

He hath not told us we shall not bear

Many a burden, many a care.

But God hath promised strength for the day,

Rest for the laborer, light for the way.

Grace for the trials, help from above,

Unfailing sympathy. Undying love.

***

I love this way the author has shown the balance of the PROMISES from God. Yes, we have down times, troubles, sorrows and I know that we falter & doubts cloud our vision but He hasn't thrown this at us unexpectedly. He tells us honestly that these tough times will happen along our daily walk but then He jumps right back in with His PROMISES to be there to guide us through.

A PROMISE that covers all of the circumstances we may have to walk through on our highway. A PROMISE of grace for the trials we meet. Help from above. A PROMISE of rest when weary and HIS undying love. Whether we succeed or fail does not change the course of God's love for us. Whatever happens, we are on a highway to heaven that is built on love and one day are PROMISED that we will walk on streets of gold.

- Blessings, Marlane.
